Should we put the lid down when flushing the toilet?
Studies (take a look at the reference links below) find that it could create plumes shooting up in the air containing live pathogens when flushing the toilet.
However, whether it could make people sick depends on how long those particular pathogens can survive and how concentrated they are in the plumes. Some virus takes higher concentration to infect people; some can’t live long in the air and on surfaces. Some, yet, can both survive long and only need a low concentration to get people sick—for example, norovirus.
The good news is, some studies point out that newer toilet models have improved their design to reduce toilet plumes, which lower the concentration of virus in the air. Also, if the person using the toilet doesn’t have those pathogens in their body, pathogens won’t be present in their waste either. Hence, it’s not too awful if someone doesn’t put down the lid when flushing the toilet once in a while.
